West Portal Elementary School students have participated in the Chinese Performing Arts Program with award-winning performances in that San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade since approximately 1990. The Chinese Performing Arts Program originated as part of West Portal Elementary School's Chinese Immersion Program, an exciting and innovative program through which children from different ethnic backgrounds learn to speak, read and write in a second language (Cantonese), while keeping Chinese cultural traditions alive. The Chinese Performing Arts Program evolved as a way to share these cultural traditions with the entire West Portal Elementary School student body The program is open to every West Portal Student willing to commit to attend practices with a positive attitude and do his or her personal best. The performers range in age from 5 to 18 years old and are students and alumnae from both the Immersion program and the General Education program at West Portal Elementary School. Quick Links
