DonorsChoose.org is an online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help students in need.

Here's how it works: our teachers post classroom project requests on DonorsChoose.org. Requests range from pencils for a poetry writing unit, to violins for a school recital, to microscope slides for a biology class.

Then, you can browse project requests and give any amount to the one that inspires you. Once a project reaches its funding goal, we deliver the materials to the school.

You'll get photos of your project taking place, a thank-you letter from the teacher, and a cost report showing how each dollar was spent. If you give over $50, you'll also receive hand-written thank-you letters from the students.

At DonorsChoose.org, you can give as little as $1 and get the same level of choice, transparency, and feedback that is traditionally reserved for someone who gives millions.

Our school has a projects at DonorsChoose.org and we'll keep posting information about them here.

Taking Technology Outside: Mobile Learning in the Garden

Ms. Dahm has a project for her 5th grade class:

Our school garden is central to student learning in our school community. Students learn about science, nutrition, sustainability, stewardship, environmentalism, and citizenship. I would like to further enhance student learning by making the garden more interactive. This will be done by placing QR codes around the garden for students to find. In order to interact with these QR codes, the students will need some sort of mobile device, and this is why we need iPods! The new generation of iPods come equipped with cameras, which will allow for the scanning of QR codes. The iPods will also allow students to add their own content to the online garden experience when they upload pictures, video, and audio files. In addition to all of the uses in the garden, these devices will provide hours of educational experiences in the classroom.
